I don't understand why he pointed it at the director and pulled the trigger
With modern (heck, even with ancient) film techniques, you don't need to actually point it at anyone. You could point it to the side of anyone, and it would still look like you pointed it at them.
I think he was mad at that person, and even if he didn't know it was loaded, he subconsciously wanted to shoot her...and he did.
One has to wonder if he actually brought that live round onto the set, and loaded it to see if he could get away with murder...hummmmmm....
